Yashima Expansions!

There are days when I wish I had jumped on this when it first came out.

Yashima expansions: Legend of the Deep Woods & Legend of the Icy Peaks Coming to Stores in April!
Greetings Gamers,
We wanted to inform you that we have some new tiles arriving in game stores.
Combine these expansions with Yashima to create epic six-player showdowns! Both expansions add new Kami Masters and new Kami, adding new characters and strategies to the core game.
Yashima:Legend of the Icy Peaks
Play as Yuki, armed with ice and a cold heart. Silence your foes by freezing out their karma and surroundings into deadly terrain. Or play as Mitsuo, the blind bard, accompanied by his monkey Saru. Enjoy controlling two miniatures on the board, dancing about your foes from multiple locations. Join forces with the Yeti Kami and make your foes shiver in fear!
Yashima: Legend of the Deep Woods
Play as Dokubaba, the plague hag, stricken with a vile poison. Use your noxious ability to drain your foes health every turn. Or play as Toru, the jolly druid, with the power to magically grow plants as easily as he laughs. Sow seeds in the belly of your enemies, then make them explode for a painful surprise! Use your agility to attack first with the Fox Kami, then use your spirit to play more tome effects, while preventing the effects of your foes.
While we encourage you to support your local retail store, if you do not have a local store, or you are international, the base game of Yashima is available through Target’s website, Amazon, and Greenbrier Games webstore.
Visit our press page for reviews and demos of the game!
Yashima Legends from Fairytale
Legends from Fairytale is a +2 player expansion which can add a fifth and sixth player to your core game. It is also a standalone game! From their own land and time Mulan, Lu Bu, and Masashi were transported to an arena to fight heros from other places in a cruel game of survival. Joined by another hero, Bruce Lee, they found themselves in a world called Yashima. The Akkorokami Kami and the Foo Dog Kami have come to improve their odds of winning.
*Note: Will only be offered through GBG webstore and at conventions while supplies last.
Along with the Fairytale expansion there will be several other enhancements only available through conventions and through our webstore for Yashima, so head over to our webstore in the next month or two for additional added items. They can only be found while supplies
last.

Stronghold Games and Eggertspiele

New Jersey, USA and Hamburg, Germany – February 13, 2016

Stronghold Games and eggertspiele are proud to announce jointly a Strategic Partnership whereby Stronghold Games will co-publish all future eggertspiele tiles in English for the North American market effective immediately.

Stronghold Games and eggertspiele have worked together previously on several projects, including the just-released Porta Nigra, as well as Time ‘N’ Space (2013), andMilestones (2012). This Strategic Partnership solidifies the relationship and the commitment of the two companies to work together exclusively in the North American market in English for all future eggertspiele titles.

Before the creation of this Strategic Partnership, Stronghold Games had previously announced the co- publication in 2016 of the award-winning Village line of games under license from eggertspiele. The Village line of games will be released by Stronghold Gamesin 2016 on this approximate schedule:
  • Village (April 2016)
  • Village Inn (April 2016)
  • Village Port (June 2016)
  • My Village (June 2016)
With this new Strategic Partnership, these announced eggertspiele titles also will be co-published by Stronghold Games in 2016:

Animals On Board

You have an ark and want to take as many animals on board as you can. Unfortunately, a guy named Noah claims all animal pairs for himself. However, you can gather a herd of three, four or five animals of a species, which is even more valuable! But forming a herd usually requires you to get a pair first…
When the arks depart, will you have the most valuable… Animals On Board?
Animals On Board is an easy to learn, fast game with lots of tricky decisions.
The last time this design team of Ralf zur Linde and Wolfgang Sentker worked together they produced a Spiel des Jahres nominee (Finca, 2009). Ralf zur Linde had another Spiel des Jahres nominee in 2012 with Eselsbrücke.
Street date: April 2016

JÓRVÍK – designed by Stefan Feld
You are a Viking Jarl gaining prestige by trading goods, holding big feasts, funding pillages, commissioning craftsmen, and hiring soldiers to defend the city against recurring invasions.JÓRVÍK is a reimagining of Die Speicherstadt (2010), where players utilize a simple yet brilliant worker-placement and bidding mechanism to build up their trading empires.

(Note: not final box cover)

JÓRVÍK will include two versions: A streamlined base game and an advanced game, which adds into the game the rare expansion formerly called Kaispeicher.
Street date: Q4′ 2016

Great Western Trail

You are rival cattlemen in 19th century America, herding cattle in a circular trail from the south of Texas to Houston, where your cattle are then shipped by train earning you money and victory points. Hire capable staff, such as cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your cattle posts, or engineers for the railroad line. Upon each arrival in Houston, have your most valuable cattle in tow.

(Note: not final box cover – will be colorized)

The winner of Great Western Trail will be the player who manages his herd best, and exhibits good timing in mastering the opportunities and pitfalls of the circular trail.
Recent designs by Alexander Pfister include Port RoyalBroom Service (last year’s Kennerspiel des Jahres winner), Isle of Skye, and Mombasa.
Street date: Q4′ 2016
Additional titles will be announced at a future date.

Stronghold Games and eggertspiele will print these games together at Ludofact Germany, the leading printer of hobby games in the world. Not only will the games from both companies be of the same great German quality, but this will also enable a virtually simultaneous worldwide release of the titles.
We are very excited by this Strategic Partnership with the world-renowned company, eggertspiele,” said Stephen Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “This strengthens our commitment to bringing great games from Europe to North America and the rest of the world.
Joining with Stronghold Games as our exclusive North American partner for English was an obvious extension of the existing relationship between the companies,” said Peter Eggert, President of eggertspiele. “Stronghold Games has been a great partner in the past, and their growth over the past several years will strengthen both brands around the world.”

Village Inn is the first expansion to Village, adding two new buildings, the Brewery and the Inn. The Brewery is a new craft building where you can acquire a new good, beer. At the Inn, you meet influential people that have unique abilities.Village Inn includes all necessary components for a fifth player as well.

100 AD by SoulJAR Games-Kickstarter

We’ve mentioned SoulJAR Games in our GameStorm 17 Special and had the opportunity to interview them here. SoulJAR now has a new game on Kickstarter: 100 AD. They were playtesting it on a back table at GameStorm 17 and I was really intrigued then. Politics and corruption abound. Take a look. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/souljargames/100-ad

Fury Of Dracula 3rd Edition!

Yes! It’s on! According to Fantasy Flight this will be available later this year. I do wish they had kept the box art closer to what was on the second edition. But, here’s the info from FF themselves:

For the dead travel fast.
–Bram Stoker, Dracula

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Fury of Dracula, a board game of deduction and gothic horror.

Count Dracula has lived Un-Dead for centuries, if not millennia. He drove the Ottomans out of Romania, and became known as Vlad the Impaler for his brutal, bloody method of dispatching his enemies. He witnessed the devastation of the black plague and the innovations of the Industrial Revolution. He has infinite wealth, infinite cunning, and countless bloodthirsty progeny scattered throughout Europe. He is by far the most legendary and most powerful of all vampires. Yet four brave mortals are now determined to find him and permanently destroy him at any cost.

In Fury of Dracula, one player assumes the role of Count Dracula as he stealthily spreads his evil influence throughout Europe. Up to four other players govern the iconic characters of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. John Seward, Lord Arthur Godalming, and Mina Harker. By day the hunters travel through Europe, searching for any possible clues about Dracula’s whereabouts. By night, they investigate their present locale and prepare for the upcoming day. And by night, Dracula creates new vampires, lays traps for the hunters, and stealthily moves to a new location. Should any hunters find Dracula, or should the Count find them, they will engage in a brutal fight for their lives.

This edition features all-new art and graphic design that complement the game’s intuitive and highly thematic mechanics. Rounds have been broken into day and night: hunters take actions during both, but Dracula can only act at night. Combat is now more streamlined and decisive. Rumor tokens give Dracula new ways to mislead hunters and extend the reach of his influence. The Count triumphs if he advances his influence track to thirteen; if the hunters can defeat him before that happens, they win the game. You can try chasing down Dracula or eluding the hunters’ grasp for yourself, next week at our Exhibit Hall booth at Gen Con.

The Hunt

“Do you not know that to-night, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?”
–A Romanian peasant woman, Dracula

When the first day of the hunt dawns, the hunters are scattered across Europe with no hint of Dracula’s location and no time to waste. Every day each hunter may take a single action. You may travel by road, rail, or sea, and you must travel only in daylight, never in darkness. If you feel travel would be imprudent, you may reserve a train ticket in advance, trade items with another hunter, or search your present location for clues. If you have become injured in your travels, or even wounded by Dracula’s servants or the Count himself, you may rest. You may also choose to venture out for supplies, but that will cause some unforeseeable event to occur: every time you draw an Item card, you must also draw an event card. That event may be the surprising appearance of a loved one who has come to join the hunt, or you may find that your horses have been possessed with evil .

In the dark of night you have another opportunity to act. Since travel in darkness is too dangerous, you must remain in the populated safety and material comforts of your present city. Seeking supplies by night is more perilous than doing so by day, more likely to cause setbacks or place you and your companions in peril.

Living mortals can act night and day, but vampires may only emerge from their coffins at night. Once the hunters have accomplished what they intended, Dracula awakes. First, he travels by secretly choosing a location card and placing it on his trail. He then draws an encounter card, laying a trap for the hunters in his current location such as an  animal minion . He may sire a bloodthirsty new vampire to serve him. Or he may travel to a city occupied by a hunter, reveal himself to his mortal enemy, and attack.

The Hunters

“We ride to death of someone. God alone knows who, or where, or what, or when, or how it may be….”
–Dr. John Seward, Dracula

Dracula is by no means an ordinary vampire, but neither are the four hunters ordinary mortals. Each one has unique abilities which enable the group to undertake and possibly even succeed in their dangerous pursuit of the King of the Un-Dead. Lord Arthur Godalming  contributes to the team his wealth, which allows him to gain extra items, and his privilege, which allows him to travel by rail more easily. Dr. John Seward, being naturally well-prepared for any adventure, may carry more items and events than his companions. As a physician, he can also help them recover from damage when they rest.

From left to right: Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. John Seward,
Mrs. Mina Harker, and Lord Arthur Godalming

The famous Dutch professor Dr. Abraham Van Helsing offers his leadership, which lets him trade events with another hunter so that the group can derive the most benefit and least harm from whatever befalls them. The professor’s profound tenacity allows him to withstand Dracula’s venomous bites better than his companions. Finally, the headstrong Mina Harker is no less brave, brilliant, or deadly than her companions. Yet she is still profoundly affected by the bite that Dracula inflicted upon her eight years ago. Now that he is risen again she is weakened by it, but because of it possesses a psychic bond with the Count that she can manipulate to determine where he may be.

Although hunted, Dracula is also eternally a hunter, seeking fresh blood, innocent victims, and his enemies’ deaths. In addition to his rage, pride, fury, and diabolical strength, Dracula possesses power cards that he can play to frustrate his pursuers, feed, or transform into a wolf.  He can also place rumor tokens on his secret hideouts to distract the hunters and expand the growing reach of his nefarious, dark influence.

The Battle for Life and Death

“Devils or no devils, or all the devils at once, it matters not; we fight him all the same.”
– Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, Dracula

To truly defeat Dracula you must not only track him down, but also face this terrible fiend in combat, risking your life in order to defeat this agent of living death. Battles comprise up to six quick rounds of playing combat cards, but may conclude sooner if someone escapes or dies. In every round the engaged hunters and Dracula make their moves simultaneously, guessing at what the other may do.

As a hunter you may attempt to strike the Count, dodge his blows, escape from his clutches, or use any weapon in your possession, such as a knife or pistol. Dracula fights with his inhuman strength, his sharp fangs, and his ability to mesmerize human beings, controlling them so that they are less capable of dealing him damage. Should the combat turn against him, Dracula may escape in the form of a bat, or eerie mist, but more often his immortal pride prevents him from abandoning a fight.

Dracula Rises Again

“He can, within his range, direct the elements; the storm, the fog, the thunder; he can command all the meaner things: the rat, and the owl, and the bat—the moth, and the fox, and the wolf; he can grow and become small; and he can at times vanish and come unknown. How then are we to begin our strike to destroy him?”
–Dr. Van Helsing, Dracula

In Fury of Dracula you embark on a terrifying and perilous hunt knowing that your most formidable enemy of all time is hunting you as well. As Mrs. Harker, Dr. Seward, Lord Godalming, or Dr. Van Helsing, you seek to defeat a nearly omnipotent creature with power over the weather, over animals, over humans alive and Un-Dead. As Dracula, you aim to subdue all of Europe beneath the dark yoke of your vampiric tyranny. Either way, more than your life is at stake. The future of the European continent, as well as the future of humanity, depend on your success.

Fury of Dracula will be available in Q4 of 2015. In the meantime, you’ll be able to demo the game in the Fantasy Flight Games booth at Gen Con.

Stronghold Games Announces the Publication of “504”

I probably would have been happy with just 503 😉

Stronghold Games Announces the Publication of “504”Designed by Friedemann Friese

“504” designated by Stronghold Games as Game #2 in its “The Great Designer Series”

New Jersey, USA – June 25, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Stronghold Games is proud to announce the publication of “504″, a game designed by the renowned game designer Friedemann Friese, co-published with 2F-Spiele.

504 is a revolutionary concept in game design.  504 offers the game enthusiast 504 different games in a single box, achieving this via the use of nine game modules, which can be merged together to form 504 unique play experiences. The nine modules are Pick-up & Deliver, Race, Privileges, Military, Exploring, Roads, Majorities, Production, andShares.

In 504, players use the spiral bound “Book of 504 Worlds“, selecting three different modules in any order from the nine available, and thereby creating a unique “World”. For example, the selection of three modules for a World may create a game that is:

  • A racing game that expands through exploration with technology improving the racing or exploration (World “253”).
  • An 18XX-style stock game with network building for income and production sites to provide workers for the road building (World “968”).
  • A wargame with a pick-up and deliver economy and bonus scoring from majorities (“World 417”).

Thematically in 504, scientists in the future are able to build small alternate Earths. Exactly 504 such Earths have thus far been built. The scientists have programmed each of these Worlds with an individual set of laws and rules, which the inhabitants strictly follow and consider most important for their lives. These may be exploration, consumption, economics, military, etc., and each is unique. You can visit all of these 504 alternate Earths to experience how the people are living, and decide which of these worlds harbours the best civilization. On which World do you want to live?  Explore them all and decide!

Stronghold Games will release 504 as the second game in its new “The Great Designer Series”, which will highlight games from the best game designers in the world. 504 is designed by the renowned game designer Friedemann Friese, whose previous works include the acclaimed games Power Grid plus its many expansions, Friday, Fauna,Fearsome Floors, and many others.

The release of 504 continues the commitment of Stronghold Games to partner with publishers globally, bringing their great games to North America and the rest of the world, as well as to continue to publish great euro-game designs.  504 follows the success of two smash-hit 2014 euro-games from Stronghold Games, Panamax andKanban: Automotive Revolution.  Stronghold Games recently announced Porta Nigra, by renowned game design team Wolfgang Kramer & Michael Kiesling, as the first game in its new “The Great Designer Series”, scheduled to be released later this year.

Stronghold Games will print 504 at Ludofact Germany, the leading printer of hobby games in the world. 504 has a tentative release date of November 2015. The MSRP for this game has not been set at this time. Stronghold Games will debut its English edition of 504 in October 2015 at the Essen Spiel in Germany.  Co-publishing partners for other language editions of 504 will be announced imminently by 2F-Spiele.

“This is a revolutionary game design for the hobby game industry,” said Stephen Buonocore, President of Stronghold Games. “It is an honor to be working with Friedemann Friese and his great company, 2F-Spiele, on such an ambitious and game-changing project.”

“My project 504 was not only hard work for 3.5 years, but it has been a dream of mine since I started to analyze game mechanics in the mid-90s”, said Friedemann Friese. “I’m happy to see my game at Stronghold Games next to a game that influenced my work a lot, Outpost. Stephen loved 504 from the first moment I showed it to him, so I believe my game is in good hands.”

Zpocalypse 2!

Just saw this in my inbox

Greetings Gamers,
Today we have a very special announcement for you all. It’s more a sneak peak, with details to follow in the coming weeks.  Since some of us have been posting pictures of our play testing, and getting all chatty about it, we could not keep the lid on the project anymore.  Stay tuned to hear more and when we will be launching on Kickstarter!

Back when Jeff and Zach first met we had one goal. OK it was more of an obsession, but who’s asking; to make a zombie apocalypse board game that more closely relayed the struggle of living in the world of the undead. That game launched our company and has given us some of the greatest gaming experiences we’ve had…so far. But like every game, it can be improved upon and grow into something greater. We have gone onto other games, but just like the hero, back from battle with the dragon (I mean just like it), it’s time to return to the Zpocalypse…

“When the city was overcome, we thought, ‘This is the end.’ Then they bombed us, and we were sure it was over. Somehow- I don’t know how, or why, but somehow we survived the onslaught. There were only a few of us, but we escaped the pit of hell that was the urban wasteland. They always say the suburbs have it better, right? They weren’t hit nearly as hard; we’ve found a sturdy house. It still has a roof and everything. We’re hungry, tired, and it’s a struggle to hold back the dead from their nightly assaults, but we’re still here, we’re not going down yet.”

Zpocalypse 2: The ‘Burbs, is a new standalone game, evolved from the original Zpocalypse, a survival board game set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Like the original, two to five players each control their own squad of survivors equipped to the teeth with weapons, food, and items. What makes this new rendition unique is that we’ve enhanced and streamlined several parts of the game. Your actions as squad leader allow the survivors to choose their tasks on the daily action board. Each choice has limited space, and will come with benefits (potential for more supplies) and costs (like all things in the Zpocalypse, it’s never pleasant!) With gained experience your survivors will level up on a variety skills to choose from. Rather than picking your path for you, now you have the ability to carve out your survival scenario for yourself, but be careful what you wish for.

  • 2 – 5 player co-operative post apocalyptic zombie survival experience.

  • Squad based system – each player controls up to four survivors!

  • Easy to master combat system, and game master-less zombie activation!

  • Tower defense element of defending your suburban base from onslaughts of zombies

  • New mechanism for assigning each survivor’s daily task such as scavenge & barter, craft & fortify, guard & patrol and lastly rest & hell.

  • New story driven scavenging with a choose your own adventure feel.

  • New skill system (melee, firearms, mechanics, sneak, and talker. )

  • Experience system to allows for survivor growth and development

  • New base defenses such as a pit trap and fuel bomb.

  • New base upgrades: workbench, campfire, ammo press, toilet still and more.
